Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti 2027 शिवाजी जयंती
Birthday of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Friday, 19 February 2027
Shivaji Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha kingdom, and is celebrated with special fervour across Maharashtra.
How the date is fixed: Fixed date: 19 February, the birth date of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj; some groups also observe it on the tithi of Phalgun Krishna Tritiya
Why Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is remembered as a ruler who built a kingdom from a few hill forts and gave the Marathi people a sense of self rule. His birth anniversary is a day to honour his courage, his military skill and his idea of Swarajya, a state run by and for its own people.
For many Indians he also stands for good governance. He set up a council of eight ministers, called the Ashta Pradhan, and promoted Marathi and Sanskrit in place of Persian in court. He is known for respecting women and all faiths, and for building a strong navy to protect the Konkan coast. Students, soldiers and leaders across parties look to his life for lessons in leadership and service.
History and story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti
Shivaji was born at Shivneri fort near Junnar in present day Pune district. His father Shahaji Bhosale served the Deccan sultanates, and his mother Jijabai shaped his early values with stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The date 19 February 1630 is the one most commonly accepted for his birth.
As a teenager he captured Torna fort and began building a base in the Sahyadri hills. His escape from Agra in 1666 and the use of fast, guerrilla style warfare became famous. In 1674 he was crowned Chhatrapati at Raigad fort. He died at Raigad in 1680.
The public celebration of his birth anniversary is younger than his legend. Social reformer Jyotirao Phule held a Shiv Jayanti gathering in Pune in 1870. Later, Bal Gangadhar Tilak promoted the festival during the freedom movement to unite people. There has long been debate over the exact birth date, and some groups still follow the Hindu calendar tithi, Phalgun Krishna Tritiya, while the Maharashtra government observes 19 February.
