Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) 2026 महाअष्टमी
The Eighth Day of Navratri and Durga Puja
Monday, 19 October 2026
In 2027: Thursday, 7 October 2027
Maha Ashtami is the eighth and most powerful day of Sharad Navratri and Durga Puja, marked by worship of Goddess Durga, Sandhi Puja and Kanya Pujan.
How the date is fixed: Ashtami (eighth day) of the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Ashwin, during Sharad Navratri
Why Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) is celebrated
Maha Ashtami is the high point of the nine nights of Sharad Navratri. Devotees believe the goddess is at her fiercest and most protective on this day, as the battle against the demon Mahishasura reaches its peak. It is a day to pray for strength, protection from evil and the well-being of the family.
In the Navadurga tradition of North India, the eighth day is devoted to Mahagauri, the calm, fair form of the goddess dressed in white, who is believed to wash away sins. In Bengal and eastern India, Ashtami is the most crowded day of Durga Puja, when people gather in pandals in new clothes to offer flowers at the feet of the goddess.
History and story of Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami)
The story comes from the Devi Mahatmya, a sacred text in the Markandeya Purana. When the gods could not defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, their combined energies took the form of Goddess Durga. During the long war, the fierce goddess Chamunda emerged from her and destroyed the demon generals Chanda and Munda. She also defeated Raktabija, a demon who multiplied from every drop of his blood that fell on the ground.
Bengal follows another tradition, from the Ramayana of the poet Krittibas. It tells that Lord Rama worshipped Durga in autumn before fighting Ravana and planned to offer her 108 blue lotuses. When one lotus went missing, he was ready to offer one of his own eyes, which are described as lotus-like, and the goddess, pleased, blessed him. This autumn worship is called akal bodhan, the untimely awakening of the goddess.
How Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) is celebrated
Many devotees fast on Ashtami, eating only fruit or nothing until the puja is over. In homes that have kept the Navratri kalash and sown barley on the first day, the goddess is worshipped with red flowers, chunri, sindoor and a lamp, and a havan is often done.
Kanya Pujan, also called kanjak, is a central custom in North India. Nine young girls, seen as forms of the goddess, and often one young boy as Bhairav, are invited home. Their feet are washed, a red thread is tied on their wrists, and they are served puri, kala chana and halwa before receiving gifts. Some families do this on Navami instead.
In Bengal-style puja, the morning starts with pushpanjali, the offering of flowers with mantras. The most sacred moment is Sandhi Puja, held during the 48 minutes when Ashtami ends and Navami begins. The goddess is worshipped as Chamunda with 108 lotuses and 108 lamps. Belur Math near Kolkata holds a Kumari Puja, in which a young girl is worshipped as the goddess.
