Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti 2026 महर्षि वाल्मीकि जयंती
Birthday of the Author of the Ramayana
Monday, 26 October 2026
In 2027: Friday, 15 October 2027
Valmiki Jayanti honours Maharishi Valmiki, the sage revered as the first poet of Sanskrit and the author of the Ramayana, on the full moon of Ashvin.
How the date is fixed: Ashvin Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashvin (Sharad Purnima)
Why Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated
Valmiki is called the Adi Kavi, the first poet, because tradition holds that he composed the first verse in classical Sanskrit metre. His Ramayana gave India the story of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, which still shapes ideas of duty, loyalty and right conduct across the country and beyond.
His own life story carries a powerful message: a person is not bound by past mistakes. According to tradition, he began as a robber and became a great sage through repentance and devotion. For the Valmiki community, especially in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, he is a spiritual guide and a symbol of dignity and equality.
History and story of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti
Popular tradition says Valmiki was born as Ratnakar and supported his family by robbing travellers in the forest. One day he stopped the sage Narada, who asked whether his family would share the burden of his sins. When Ratnakar went home and asked, every family member refused. Shaken, he returned to Narada, who gave him the name of Rama to chant. Unable to say it properly at first, he repeated "mara mara", which turned into "Rama". He meditated for so long that an anthill, called valmika in Sanskrit, grew over him, and he came to be known as Valmiki.
The Ramayana itself tells how poetry began. While bathing near the Tamasa river, Valmiki saw a hunter shoot one of a pair of krauncha birds. His grief came out as a perfectly measured verse, and this became the model for the epic. The Ramayana has about 24,000 verses in seven books. Valmiki also appears inside the story: Sita lived in his ashram after leaving Ayodhya, and her sons Lava and Kusha were born and taught there.
How Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated
Valmiki temples are decorated with flowers and lights. Devotees hold readings of the Ramayana and kirtan, and many places organise a shobha yatra with a decorated portrait of the sage, bands and tableaux from the Ramayana. Langar and free food stalls are common. Schools and community groups hold talks on his life and on the values of the Ramayana. Because the day is also Sharad Purnima, many families keep kheer under the moonlight at night.
