Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti 2027 महर्षि दयानंद सरस्वती जयंती
Birthday of the Founder of the Arya Samaj
Tuesday, 2 March 2027
The birth anniversary of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, the Vedic scholar and social reformer who founded the Arya Samaj in 1875 and wrote Satyarth Prakash.
How the date is fixed: Dashami (tenth day) of the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna in the Purnimanta calendar; his Gregorian birth date is 12 February 1824
Why Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti is celebrated
This day honours Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, the monk and reformer who founded the Arya Samaj. He asked Hindus to return to the Vedas as the root of their faith and to drop practices that, in his view, had no basis in them. Among these he counted idol worship, caste fixed by birth, child marriage and the ban on widows remarrying.
For his followers, the jayanti is a day to recall that message of reason, self-reliance and service. His push for the education of girls, for the study of Sanskrit and Hindi and for social equality led to a large network of schools and colleges that still shapes education across North India.
History and story of Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti
He was born in 1824 at Tankara, in the Morbi area of present-day Gujarat, and his parents named him Mool Shankar. Arya Samaj tradition recalls a Mahashivratri night when the boy, then about fourteen, kept vigil in a Shiva temple. He saw mice running over the idol and eating the offerings, and he began to doubt that the image held divine power. The deaths of a younger sister and an uncle soon after turned his mind to questions of life and death. In his early twenties he left home to avoid marriage and wandered for years as an ascetic.
At Mathura he studied for nearly three years under Swami Virjanand, a blind scholar of Sanskrit grammar, who asked him to spread true Vedic learning in return. In 1875 he founded the Arya Samaj in Bombay and published Satyarth Prakash, his best known book. He travelled across North and West India, debated scholars of many faiths and set out ten principles for the Samaj. He died at Ajmer in 1883, on the night of Diwali, which the Arya Samaj still observes in his memory.
How Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti is celebrated
Arya Samaj mandirs mark the day with a havan, the Vedic fire ritual in which ghee and samagri are offered into the fire while mantras are chanted. There is no idol worship. Members gather for satsang, bhajans and talks on his life and teachings. Many units take out a shobha yatra through the town, and schools run by the Samaj hold essay contests, debates and recitation of Vedic verses. Some families read portions of Satyarth Prakash at home and donate to gurukuls and charities.

Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti across India
The Arya Samaj grew strongest in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, so the day is most visible there. A few years after his death, his followers opened the first Dayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) school at Lahore in 1886, and the DAV movement today runs hundreds of institutions.
Uttarakhand has a direct link. In 1902 Swami Shraddhanand set up Gurukul Kangri near Haridwar to teach in the Vedic tradition that Dayanand had urged, and the institution is now a university. Dehradun has active Arya Samaj mandirs and a well known DAV college, where the jayanti brings havans and lectures. At Tankara, his birthplace, the Samaj holds a large gathering on Mahashivratri, called Rishi Bodh Utsav, to recall his awakening.
