The Last Friday of Ramadan
Friday, 5 March 2027
Moon calendar: 5 Mar 2027
Last Friday of Ramadan 1448 AH (Islamic Hijri calendar)
The Hijri month begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, so the date can move by a day in India.
Jamat-ul-Vida is the last Friday of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri year, just before Eid ul-Fitr.
Jamat ul-Vida is the last Friday of Ramadan, when Muslims gather in large numbers for the Friday prayer to bid farewell to the holy month of fasting.
How the date is fixed: The last Friday of Ramadan in the Islamic lunar calendar; the exact date depends on the sighting of the moon
Why Jamat-ul-Vida is celebrated
Jamat ul-Vida, also called Jumu'atul Wida or Alvida Jumma, means the Friday of farewell. It is the last Friday of Ramadan, the month of fasting, and Muslims treat it as a moment to say goodbye to a month of prayer, discipline and charity. Friday prayer already holds a special place in Islam, and offering it in the closing days of Ramadan carries extra emotion.
Many believers use the day to seek forgiveness, pray for family and community, and resolve to keep the good habits of the month alive after Eid. Mosques see some of their biggest congregations of the year.
History and story of Jamat-ul-Vida
The Quran has a chapter named after Friday, Surah Al-Jumu'ah, which tells believers to set aside buying and selling and come to the remembrance of God when the call for the Friday prayer is given. Ramadan is the month in which, according to Islamic belief, the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, and its last ten nights include Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power. The final Friday therefore sits inside the holiest stretch of the Islamic year.
Islamic scholars point out that the Quran and hadith do not set this Friday apart as a festival of its own. Its importance has grown through custom in South Asia and other Muslim regions, where people see it as the last chance in the month to join the large Friday congregation.
How Jamat-ul-Vida is celebrated
Fasting continues as on every day of Ramadan, from sehri before dawn to iftar at sunset. Men gather for the Juma namaz at midday, and mosques often overflow onto nearby roads, so city police usually plan traffic diversions. The imam's khutbah reflects on the month that is ending, the value of patience and the duty of charity. Many families pay zakat or sadaqat ul-fitr around this time so that poor households can also celebrate Eid. Women pray at home or at mosques that have space for them. Markets stay busy late into the night as people shop for Eid.
Important days and moments
- Sehri (Before dawn, Friday 20 March 2026)
Families eat the pre-dawn meal and begin the fast, as on every day of Ramadan. - Juma namaz and khutbah (Midday)
Large congregations offer the Friday prayer and hear a sermon about the closing days of Ramadan. - Iftar (Sunset)
The fast is broken with dates and water, followed by a meal shared with family and neighbours.
Jamat-ul-Vida across India
In India the biggest gatherings take place at the Jama Masjid in Delhi, the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, the Taj-ul-Masajid in Bhopal and the large mosques of Lucknow, Kolkata and Mumbai. In Kashmir, the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar draws huge crowds. In Uttarakhand, mosques in Dehradun, Haridwar district, Roorkee and Haldwani see packed Friday prayers.
The date can move by a week. If Ramadan ends after 29 days and Eid falls on a Friday, the farewell Friday becomes the one before it. For 2026 the date assumes a 30-day Ramadan with Eid on Saturday, 21 March.
