Buddha Purnima 2027 बुद्ध पूर्णिमा
Birth and Enlightenment of Lord Buddha
Thursday, 20 May 2027
Buddha Purnima marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha, observed on the Vaishakha full moon with prayers, meditation, charity and lamps at viharas across India.
How the date is fixed: Purnima (full moon) of the Hindu lunar month of Vaishakha

Why Buddha Purnima is celebrated
Buddha Purnima honours Gautama Buddha, the teacher whose path of wisdom and compassion began in India and spread across Asia. Buddhists in India and many other countries hold that three great events of his life took place on a Vaishakha full moon: his birth, his enlightenment and his final passing, called the mahaparinirvana. For this reason the day is often called thrice blessed.
The festival is a call to practise the heart of the Buddha's teaching. He taught that suffering comes from craving and ignorance, and that it can end by following the Noble Eightfold Path: right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration. He asked his followers to test every teaching through their own experience rather than accept it blindly. On this day Buddhists renew their commitment to non-violence, honesty and kindness towards every living being.
For India, the day also recalls a shared heritage. The Buddha lived, taught and died in the Gangetic plain. The lion capital of Ashoka from Sarnath became the national emblem, and the Dharma Chakra sits at the centre of the national flag.
History and story of Buddha Purnima
Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince of the Shakya clan at Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, close to the border of Uttar Pradesh. Most scholars place his life in the sixth or fifth century BCE, though the exact dates remain debated. Tradition says he grew up in comfort at Kapilavastu, married Yashodhara and had a son, Rahul. The sight of an old man, a sick man, a dead body and finally a calm wandering monk stirred him to leave the palace at about twenty-nine in search of an end to human suffering.
For six years he tried harsh fasting and penance, and then gave them up as a dead end. A village woman named Sujata offered him a bowl of rice cooked in milk, and he regained his strength. Sitting under a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, he resolved not to rise until he understood the truth, and on a full moon night he attained enlightenment. The tree came to be called the Bodhi tree, and Siddhartha became the Buddha, the awakened one.
He gave his first sermon in the deer park at Sarnath near Varanasi and spent about forty-five years teaching across the kingdoms of Magadha and Kosala. At the age of eighty he passed away at Kushinagar in present-day Uttar Pradesh. Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar became the four main places of Buddhist pilgrimage, and the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1999 the United Nations gave international recognition to the day of Vesak.
How Buddha Purnima is celebrated
Buddhists start the day early with a visit to a vihara or monastery. Many dress in white. They offer flowers, candles and incense before the Buddha image, chant verses in Pali, Sanskrit or Tibetan, and take the five precepts: to avoid killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech and intoxicants. Monks give discourses on the Buddha's life, and lay followers spend time in meditation.
Giving is central to the day. Devotees offer food and robes to monks, feed the poor and run free health camps. Many households cook kheer to recall Sujata's offering. Some people pour water or milk at the roots of a Bodhi tree and hang prayer flags or lamps in its branches. A common ritual is bathing a small image of the infant Buddha with scented water. Most observers eat vegetarian food and avoid alcohol. In the evening, temples and homes light lamps, and some groups take out processions with the Buddha image and the Buddhist flag.

Buddha Purnima across India
Bodh Gaya hosts the largest celebration in India, as pilgrims from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, Japan and the Tibetan community join Indian devotees around the Mahabodhi Temple. Sarnath and Kushinagar hold processions and fairs. In Sikkim, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Himachal Pradesh, monasteries mark Saga Dawa, the holy month that honours the same events, with prayers and walks around stupas, though the Tibetan calendar can place the main day on a different date. In Maharashtra, where millions follow the Buddhism that Dr B.R. Ambedkar embraced in 1956, viharas hold prayers, lectures and cultural programmes.
Dehradun has a strong Tibetan Buddhist presence. The Mindrolling Monastery at Clement Town, with its towering Great Stupa, and the Tibetan settlements around the city draw visitors for prayers and butter lamp offerings. Many Hindu families in Uttarakhand also keep the day as Vaishakha Purnima, with a holy dip in the Ganga at Haridwar or Rishikesh, a Satyanarayan katha and charity.
