Hariyali Teej 2027 हरियाली तीज
Monsoon Festival of Shiva and Parvati
Wednesday, 4 August 2027
Hariyali Teej is a monsoon festival in which women celebrate the union of Shiva and Parvati with fasting, green clothes, mehendi, swings and songs, mainly in North India.
How the date is fixed: Shravan Shukla Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of the month of Shravan.
Why Hariyali Teej is celebrated
Hariyali means greenery, and the festival welcomes the fresh green of the monsoon. According to tradition, Goddess Parvati did long and hard penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. On this day Shiva accepted her. Married women keep a fast and pray for a happy married life and their husbands' long life. Young girls pray for a good husband.
History and story of Hariyali Teej
Teej grew as a women's festival in the farming regions of North India, where the rains decide the year's harvest. Royal courts in Rajasthan made it a public celebration, with processions of the goddess Teej Mata. The custom of sindhara, gifts sent from a woman's parents' home, kept family ties strong for married daughters living far away.
How Hariyali Teej is celebrated
Women wear green sarees or lehengas and green glass bangles, and apply mehendi on their hands. A day earlier, many receive a sindhara from their mothers, with clothes, bangles, sweets and ghewar. On the day, they fast, worship clay idols of Shiva and Parvati, and listen to the Teej katha. Swings are hung from trees, and women swing in groups while singing Teej songs.
